Why is the Best of SEO Often Unseen?

Most SEOs are self-taught. They have learned of optimization techniques by reading blogs like Moz, Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land. Most people start out in either one of the three. Soon they start asking questions on SEO and graduate to answering a few questions. Then, lo and behold, they start posting on their blogs and sharing their opinions and own SEO tact.

During this transition, it is quite easy to think of yourself as an SEO expert. Many of us not only think of ourselves as an expert but also declare so on LinkedIn, Google Plus, and Facebook. They give expert opinions in forums and solve complicated problems on website optimization. However, that is rarely the truth.

Forget only mainstream blogs

Most of the freshers read mainstream blogs for the security in numbers. Thousands of people read Moz Blog and SEJ. Even the guest posts on these blogs are the epitome of SEO perfection. You will get the correct information about any trend or change in search engine optimization at any of the mainstream blogs.

Does this come at a cost? Of course, it does. You will miss out on some great work from some of the best minds of SEO. Just like any other field of work, the best work often goes unrecognized. Most of the readers do not even recognize names beyond Rand Fishkin and John Doherty. You need to explore the depths of SEO into the real where great minds work like the Quest Internet Media.

Most of the SEO-activists are absent from popular blogs and social media. You would think that SEO experts would optimize their blogs and online profiles. However, that is rarely the case, and we do not understand the creative whimsies of these SEO geniuses.

We cannot find articles on how they achieved this success overnight by optimizing their website for a global audience. All we do know is, it is true, and it is possible.  

The best SEO measures are not always transparent

The reality is rather shocking. Google is a corporation (that is one truth most of us keep forgetting) and a mega corporation at that! Google rolls out one change after another. It is quite apparent that Google does not care much about the plight of the marketers. Every time Google updates its algorithm, SEOs start out on a new path. If they are lucky, the algorithm is small, and the adjustments are small too.

However, if something massive like Penguin hits the sand castle of their websites once more, the SEOs will have to set out on a new quest to find better options for optimization of the site for Google.  

This just means, even if these marketers were to go out and upload their SEO methods on their Facebook walls and Twitter pages for public viewing, it would not be of much use for most webmasters. You will get a couple of days’ respite before the optimization recedes as Google adopts some other algorithm update.

What about the lesser-known blogs?

Once you have enough knowledge of SEO, you should also include the lesser-known blog publications in your reading domain. These blogs bear exciting news that remains unheard in the buzz of more tantalizing news. They publish niche predictions, official update charts and the effects of such updates on most of the websites.

SEO is not only for the big fish, and these small blogs are here to prove that. You can learn niche optimization techniques for your blog and website from these sources. They can tell you about editing scripts and add or removing snippets of codes from your site to make it more SEO friendly.  

Niche writers also come up with nifty techniques for boosting SEO that will not cost big bucks. You can both save money and gain popularity. Moz blog, SEJ, and blogs like these have a wider audience range. This automatically means they have to include content for a varied interest. Many times, the solutions, tips, and tricks become rather general.

Getting answers to questions from SEO experts is almost impossible on blogs with a high traction. The key to finding a good author who is not as popularized on the web is to look at the LinkedIn profile and other business profiles. Like other online businesses, you need to stay on toes as Google continually updates their search algorithms. Make sure you keep up with the latest trends to maintain market visibility.

Below are some of the areas you need to keep an eye on.

Research user intent and optimize your content

There’s no doubt of the importance of keywords; however, a simple keyword search can will only produce equally simple results. Before typing words into the search box, most of your prospective customers know exactly what their looking for. Search engines have greatly evolved and can now effectively determine user content.

As a result, an increasing number of users are typing full phrases and queries into search boxes. These queries bring together data and activate algorithms that generate search engines results that are far more accurate than they were a few years ago.

It is therefore important for you as a business owner or brand manager to optimize your digital content in a way that captures users’ intent, in addition to simply catching specific keywords. To succeed at this, you need to do the following:

  • Investigate. In addition to the search terms that direct users to your page, find out user questions that your content provides answers to.

  • Optimize. After carrying out your analyses and determining what requires improvement, implement the new ideas for enhancing your ratings. Use your research to tailor your digital content to the user’s experience.

3 Important Trends You Should Already Know in 2017

It isn’t enough to just cover the basics – claim your local SEO listings, research and apply geo-specific keywords and optimize linking strategy. In 2017, setting your business apart will demand that you go deeper and understand just what search engines want from you. This article discusses three relatively new but very important techniques for survival in the 2017 internet landscape.

Structured data markup

Your website must be ‘crawler-friendly’ as this is one of Google’s important ranking factors. This is especially true if you’re looking to show up in rich snippets and quick answers, which are heavily reliant on machine learning. Consider that Google shows quick answers for over 40% of all queries, and this number can only be expected to rise.

Structured data markup describes site ‘properties’ or ‘things’. If you have a travel blog, for instance, things would be the travel posts/articles and properties would be attributes of these posts.

In indexing webpages, Google pulls up any text it deems relevant to the search query onto the quick answer box, especially when you don’t have searcher-friendly information optimized in your posts. Asking your SEO agency to employ structured data markup allows Google to reach out to the more important/relevant information that tells searchers that you have the details they want, making them more likely to click through into your site. You can use the Google Structured Data Testing Tool to find out whether your markup details are correct.

Accelerated mobile pages

More searches are being performed using mobile devices than desktops, as of November 2016, and this number is still rising. Mobile commerce also has three times the growth rate of conventional ecommerce. In a mobile-oriented world, speed is one of the most important characteristics your website should have. More than 50% of site visitors will abandon a site if it takes more than three seconds to load.

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) gives a stripped-down version of mobile web by eliminating any non-crucial details from a page and allowing it to load much faster. Since Google has found site speed to be very important to its searchers, AMP has been placed high up in the list of organic mobile search ranking factors. AMP sites are placed higher up for searches conducted on mobile devices, and non-AMP sites are pushed down regardless of relevance or content. Many brands still haven’t optimized their pages to AMP and yet it’s slowly becoming mandatory if you’re to retain or improve your ranking on organic search.

User intent optimization

User search intent optimization isn’t new, but it is becoming more important because of local SEO and voice searches. User search intent optimization is one of the most effective tips for boosting local SEO. If your SEO agency hasn’t begun to do this for you, you may need to sit them down and have a frank chat with them. You’re already late to the curve as this technique isn’t exactly new but is becoming more important.

There are three main aspects of user intent optimization:

  • Delivering an immediate answer of clarification to a searcher

When creating webpage content, think about how the user will arrive at a particular page, e.g. information search versus transactional search. Otherwise, users may bounce off your site and hence reduce your credibility as a resource on that search with Google and other search engines.

Why influencer marketing is now the focus of attention for marketers

Today, the majority of buyers research online before they buy any product. They refer to product reviews and recommendations, as they want to gather credible information about the product from users or reliable advocates to gauge how good it will be for them. In the process, if they come across the recommendation or comments of some person they feel reliable enough to speak on the product, they do not hesitate to accept their views and buy the product.  The opinion expressed by the person whom buyers find dependable has influenced the buying decision.

The above process of buying illustrates how important the person recommending the product alias the influencer is to buyers.  Since marketers are always on the lookout for ways to appease customers and want to find the best way to reach them, they take help from influencers. Marketers use influencers to talk about their products favorably so that buyers are impressed to buy the product. New breed of influencers

The LSA (Local Search Association) studies have shown that more than 50% of the consumers think that they would like to explore business websites while searching for local businesses. As of late, about 70% of the customers simply switch away from the non-mobile friendly websites. Therefore, having a website and making it responsive is essential.

The importance of a good business website as a source of information and platform for lead and sales generation is evident. The search results and online reviews about a local business contain only limited info, and the consumers those who want to know more will naturally land on your official website where detailed information is available.

Joomla and SEO: How to Improve Your Website Ranking through Proper Optimization?

With so many updates and algorithm changes rolling out from all directions, SEO has become a huge concern for most webmasters. How to use Microdata for SEO?

Recently, the topic of Rich Snippets or Microdata has been taking the Joomla world by storm. It might be a little advanced for new users, but they work like magnets for bots and real human users. Google loves the use of Microdata since it can structure your data and this will help the bots find a direction in your website content. It will also help your site get brownie points from Google and ratings/reviews from your users.

Usually,Schema.org standardizes the syntax, and your tags have properties assigned to them. It helps the leading search engines including Google and Bing understand your site's HTML code. It will take some time to bring in the great results you want to see. Some of the research from Ithaca SEO shows that almost 30% of all users are likely to go to a site that has microdata.

Microdata options for Joomla versions

If you are using Joomla 3.2 or below, you will see options to enable microdata. It is the first version that has given some extent of support for microdata. If you are using Joomla 3.3, your microdata is probably just hard coded to your core code. We are hoping that there will be changes which will allow users to switch the micro-data on and off according to need. In case you cannot see any microdata on your HTML, you may have template overrides that you need to disable. Take a look at your folder – templates\Your_Template\html\com_content\article. You should be looking for the default.php file here. You will also find many plugins for Joomla 2.5 and above, which can add microdata or rich snippets to your website.

What happened after the Fred update?

Ever since the recent (unconfirmed) update from Google in March 2017, SEO has gone topsy-turvy for most websites and blogs. A lot has changed in the world of blogging, guest blogging and authorship. Google had stopped showing authorship data since 2014. However, off late, keyword use and optimization of authorship data has no impact on SEO whatsoever. You may be writing Shakespeare’s biodata for all Google cares! Some of the bloggers do report connecting their Google+ page to their blogs or using a Gravatar account helps. You can try either, but the latest report states that neither of them has any effect on Google rankings.

Your focus should be on local SEO

Local SEO has gained a tremendous impetus, thanks to Fred, the unconfirmed update. Most of the sellers are trying to sell to a local crowd that relates to a common language, purchasing power or culture. For that, you do not need to work on optimizing content for the whole country or even the entire state. For example – if you are a dentist in Ithaca, you do not need all internet users from all over New York know that. People from Binghamton drive all the way for one dentist’s appointment. You need people of Ithaca, either Northwest or Northeast, wherever your chamber is located to know about your practice.

So let’s get real here. You need to optimize your business for your local target audience. It is great if you have started by registering your business on Google My Business. Next, you need to focus on local SEO. Submit the same, correct NAP to your local online directories including Yelp, Yellow Pages, Superpages, Manta, Foursquare, Angie’s List and Yahoo Small Business Directory.Also, include your opening and closing hours, website address (if any) and contact information to get a better ranking. It will help you gain high credibility as well. As of the latest updates, businesses with a prominent online presence are ranking better and scoring more brownie points from Google.

Geo-tag all your images before you share them across a bunch of social media platforms. Do not forget to use microdata for your address. You can use it as a plugin. Alternatively, you can use a custom HTML module that has a pre-written (but verified) code for the address module of your website.
