How to handle late-paying (but otherwise good) client(s)

by @ Web Designer Forum: www.webdesignerforum.co.uk

Hi,

I have a couple of clients that are in a habit of paying their invoices late. In truth, I have several clients that regularly pay a couple of months late but as the fees involved are usually quite small I don't get too vexed about them.

But one particular client usually pays their invoices between 1 and 2 months late (and even then only after me repeatedly chasing). The invoices involved are moderately large - roughly 1/2 to a full months' income.

They do always pay in full in the end, and are otherwise an okay client, who has provided a pretty steady stream of work over the past 4 or 5 years. Yet I am not reliant upon them and have recently turned away some nice projects because I'm busy on their stuff.

A couple of months' back a large invoice was unpaid a couple of months down the line, despite repeated reminders. I contacted them to say that I was unhappy with this and from now on all invoices would be due upon receipt and should any invoice be 30 days overdue I would halt work until it has cleared.

The business owner and my marketing contact there were both apologetic and said they'd make sure it did not happen again.

Yet, this month, the same situation. Because (mostly) of the late payment of this invoice, my business account became overdrawn. As there is no work ongoing with them at this very moment, I can't "halt" work.

I am wondering what my next step should be.

I'm considering:

  • An ultimatum: "I am a small independent business. If you want me to continue working with me I need invoices to be paid within 30 days. If you are not able to do that then - with regret - I will have to stop working with you. If that is the case then I'll send a final invoice to settle the account and provide you with backups of all work completed to date."
  • From now on, all work must be prepaid: "So from now on we will work on a retained basis. I suggest a monthly budget of £xxx. You will transfer this to me by monthly standing order. When the budget is used up I will stop work. We can increase or decrease the retainer amount according to needs, however it does need to be paid monthly and on time."
  • Bite my tongue and continue chasing!

Security - One DB per SaaS tenant

by @ Web Designer Forum: www.webdesignerforum.co.uk

Hi

I'm building a small SaaS web app that I plan on selling to a handful of local small businesses in the future.  I've decided to use the following setup:

- Master DB with user and tenant table.

- Each tenant has their own copy of the app DB.

- Each tenant provides a 'domain' name, which is used to identify multiple users of the same business.

The logon process is:

1.  User enters their 'domain' name, username and password to request logon.

2.  Logon class makes SELECT query for domain and user in master DB, then returns hashed password if match found.

3.  Password verified using popular third party auth library.

4.  Domain is used to look up tenant DB connection details that are stored in the master DB tenant table.

5.  Returned tenant DB connection details are used from this point onwards to GET/PUT/DELETE data.

By following the above process, each user can only access the DB belonging to their employer, which keeps each set of customer's data segregated from the others.

My problem is ...

Steps 4 and 5 of the logon process seem a little flimsy and insecure.  The most secure solution I can think of, would be to encrypt all of the tenant DB connection details in the relevant table and decrypt on the fly as required, so that anybody who gains access to the master DB, can't use the information to access tenant DBs.

My biggest concern is that retrieval of the tenant DB connection details is all down to the domain supplied.  If somebody was able to use any valid username/password, but trick my app into providing another tenant's domain during logon, they would immediately be able to access that company's data.

Does the process I've designed appear secure enough if the tenant DB details are encrypted at rest, or am I missing a layer of security that would harden it, please?

They cold-call you: Beware of companies that cold-call for SEO, unless you know the business and they are local to you. Most decent SEO's are growing so fast they don't have time to cold call nationally. The ones who do are usually scammers. Another sign -- you never heard of the company, they aren't local and they emailed you constantly without your permission or any previous contact with their company. Your business is not located within 50 miles of that company's headquarters, yet you are getting non-stop calls or emails. We have seen so many people get scammed, 75% of them never knew it. They don't ask for FTP information: How do you know -- if you've already paid for work -- if the

Do you include .html in your internal page links?

by @ Web Designer Forum: www.webdesignerforum.co.uk

I stopped including.html in my links some time ago. A little script in the htaccess file helps with that.

However, in doing so I probably broke access to my site visitor stats page which was showing up as 403 forbidden. I ignored that for some months and didn't care about it.

Yesterday, I asked my site support to fix access to that page, which they quickly did.

Unfortunately their fix seemed to make every linked page on my site 404.

I think they removed my custom htaccess file which was simply in the root folder, and used their own simpler htaccess file in the comm folder.

Reversing the situation completely gave me back access to my pages, but the visitor stats page is 403 again (obviously).

The confusing thing is that the tech (on live chat) said that their specialist said that I can't have urls without .html, but that if I add the following to the htaccess it should fix all of the problems if I include .html in the urls:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.html

I tested it, but it didn't seem to work. I thought I had been doing things correctly seeing as the site was working fine.

So, as per the topic title, do you include .html in your url page links (when writing code)?

If you think you are interested, I can paste the htaccess file I'm using, and the one that they preferred to use (which killed all of my internal links (403)).

I don't mind writing .html in my code if that's necessary. I simply don't want .html to appear in the browser or when hovering over links.

It's no big deal, but it would be nice to fix the visitor stats page and keep the site as is, if I'm not doing anything wrong.

Just in case you have any thoughts, please chime in.

I hope you are all well, and thanks.

I've mostly neglected the site for a quite a few months, but would like to keep things ticking over.

Contact form spam

by @ Web Designer Forum: www.webdesignerforum.co.uk

I seem to be getting a lot of contact form spam. I don't know if it is a robot or a person but sometimes only garbily gook is typed in every field (ie - hjkshdjfhdjlsdkj) and sometimes it is a sales pitch for seo. I am wondering if a robot is capable of answering the captcha on the form and automatically fill it out? If so, is there another user friendly way to weed out the contact form spam done by robots?

Would It be negative UX to have a field that must not be filled out. If filled out the form does not work? Perhaps it can be invisible to the user but would it still be visible to a robot? But what if it is a person filling out the forms? Thoughts?

Please advise. Thank you.
